April/May Newsletter
MATH
Topics 9, 10, and 11 have students working with place value to 1,000 and then using what they know about working with 2-digit numbers to both add and subtract 3-digit numbers. We will end the year by exploring measurement where students will measure and estimate lengths using standard units. We will also delve into Geometry a bit by learning to reason with 2-dimensional shapes and their attributes.
AIS Runs For MukwashiThis year, our AIS community is coming together in 3 different running events to help raise funds for the Mukwashi Trust School in Zambia. Over the last 2 years, we have been holding various events to raise money to help our friends in Zambia build classrooms for students in grades 10-12. These new classrooms provide students with the opportunity to complete their high school diploma at Mukwashi. The Mukwashi Trust School now needs supplies to fill their new learning space and we want to help them realize their dreams.
How can you help? You can sponsor our runners who will be taking part in 3 different events. On April 19th, the Elementary School will take part in their annual Fun Run. On April 22nd, several students and staff members will be running in the Vienna City Marathon. On May 27th, our Elementary School girls running club, along with several AIS parents and Middle School girls, will be participating in the Frauenlauf. By sponsoring our runners, you are donating to a great cause. ES will receive a flyer with a donation envelope and donation boxes can be found at the reception desk in the Villa, the Elementary, Middle and High School offices, and at both our libraries. |
SCIENCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES
In science, we will be exploring the world of Insects and Plants, where students will study life cycles, observing how living things grow and change. Through their observations, they will be able to describe how living things interact with one another and their environment. This hands-on, interactive unit provides a wonderful framework for students to see the various structures that living things use to survive.
In Social Studies, our Connections to the Community unit will have students building on what they know about classroom and school communities as they learn about our local community (Neustift am Walde). We will study how communities meet the needs and wants of their members, and how rules and responsibilities are important to the well-being of a community. Students will also learn about economics (people make choices about how to meet their needs and wants), history (communities change over time), and civics (people in communities have responsibilities and they depend upon each other). AIS Summer CampsAIS summer camp offers a wide variety of programs for the first 4 weeks of the summer holiday. We offer a quality program for all age groups and different interests from sports to music. Please check out our web site for more details and registration.
