What to Send to School Each Day
Students should bring the following items to school every day:
Homework Folder
Book Baggie
Water Bottle
Snack (unless school snack is pre-purchased)
A note about snacks: Please make sure the food you send is healthy; try to avoid cookies, chocolate, and candy as they may give your child a quick boost, but don't sustain them through several hours of learning until lunch time.
If your child is participating in an After School Activity, please send them with an additional snack to eat at the start of their activity. Students will not be allowed to purchase snacks in the cafe.
Indoor Shoes
Each student should have a good pair of indoor shoes that stay at school. These shoes should be easy to put on, comfortable, and good for PE.
Parent Volunteers
We welcome parent volunteers! Whether you volunteer as a room parent, a guest reader, or help with math, we are happy to have you as our partners. Please let us know if you want to assist in the classroom. We also welcome family friends or relatives who might be visiting to come in and read a favorite story to our class.
Winter Clothing
Please make sure your child has the right outdoor clothing for the weather. When it snows, students will need snow pants, boots, waterproof gloves and hats. Students all go outside in the snow, but if they don't have snow pants they are not allowed to play in the snow so it is not very fun. Please label all items with your child's name as it is so easy to get them mixed up or misplaced. Also, AIS often gets snow even when it is just raining in the city center.
Birthdays
Birthdays are special, and we love celebrating each child's birthday in class. We want to encourage independence and personal responsibility in second grade, so we ask that you please send treats that are easy for your child to distribute (no big cakes, please). Muffins, cupcakes or cookies are perfect. Parents are welcome to join us, but if you can’t make it, that’s fine, too.
Dietary Considerations: Please check with your child's teacher for allergy information.
A note about birthday party invitations: Your child may only pass out invitations at school if they are inviting the entire class. If not, please find another way to invite friends as we don't want any students to feel left out. We are happy to provide specific parent emails to you for this purpose.
Water Bottles- For Water Only
It is important that each student has a good, reusable water bottle at school. Please discuss with your child when you would like them to bring it home to be washed. Some students bring them home daily - others at the end of each week. Just make sure they bring it back so they can easily get drinks when they need them during the day.
Homework in Grade 2
The expectations for homework in Grade 2 are for students to read for 20 minutes every day and to complete an additional 20 minutes of homework each night, Monday through Thursday. Homework will start the week of September 12.
